Dear McGilvra Parents and Guardians,
My name is Clare Sommers, and I am so happy to serve your children as McGilvra’s school counselor! I am at McGilvra on Tuesdays from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Wednesday 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
I have been working with youth and parents as a School Counselor and Social Worker for the past 15 years in schools and community agencies. I received my bachelor’s degree and Masters of Social Work from University of Washington and received my Master’s in School Counseling from Seattle University.
As a school counselor, my first priority is student success. I collaborate with parents, teachers, and others to help all students achieve the skills and behaviors that help thriving learners. Together we develop strategies to overcome challenges that can get in the way of classroom performance. As a parent, your knowledge of your children’s’ needs is crucial in developing these strategies; therefore, you are a crucial part of the team.
As a school counselor, I interact with students in the classroom, individually, or within small counseling groups. In the classroom, I deliver classroom guidance lessons aligned with the American School Counselor Association’s standards for fostering academic, personal/social, and career development. Classroom guidance gives students opportunities develop social skills necessary to navigate school and life.
Whatever manner your student is served by a school counselor, you can be assured that student growth is monitored. I monitor student growth and change in knowledge, attitudes and behaviors through self-report, and teacher and parent input. Your child’s success is very important and I will work diligently with you and staff to help your child reach his or her full potential.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me for any area of concern. Let’s work together to help your student reach his or her potential this school year!
